Learning about the alchemy and design of yantras will give you some insight into their purpose and power. Most yantras are composed of four design elements: circles, triangles, squares, and a central point. Each design element has a corresponding color and is associated with one of the energy centers in our bodies, with one of our five senses, and with one of the five elements in nature.
The CENTRAL POINT symbolizes the space element and corresponds to the colors blue and green. It represents the origin of individual consicousness at the point of union between the individual and the Divine. It is the point at which intention connects with cosmic energy to create form. The central point relates to the carotid plexus, or throat center, and is associated with the sense of hearing.
The CIRCLE (also sometimes shown as a six-pointed star, which is an inverted triangle superimposed over and upright triangle) represents the air element and corresponds to the colors green and blue. Sometimes the air elements is respresented by the symbol of a crescent, as well. The circle contains the central point and is also the expansion of that point. It is symbolic of individual consciousness and its expansion into Divine Consciousness. The circel is associated with the cardiac plexus, or heart center, and is connected to the sense of touch.
The UPWARD TRIANGLE symbolizes the fire element, and its corresponding colors are yellow and red. This triangle represents male Shiva energy. The triangle's three connecting lines point toward the sky. The horizontal line creates balance, and the two diagonal lines represent movement. The upward triangle draws your attention to the outer world of activity. It is associated with the solar plexus, or naval center, and with the sense of sight.
The DOWNWARD TRIANGLE represents the water element; its corresponding colors are orange and white. Sometimes the water element is also represented by the symbol of a crescent. In this position, the triangle respresents the feminine Shakti energy. It consists of of three connected lines: the horizontal line represents stability and the two diagonal lines represent movement. This triangle brings your attention to the inner world of feeling. The downward triangle is related to the hypogastric plexus, or sexual center, and is associated with the sense of taste.
The SQUARE is related to the earth element, and its corresponding colors are red and yellow. It is made up of four connected lines: two parallel vertical lines representing movement and two parallel horizontal lines representing stability. Together, these vertical and horizontal lines invoke balance. The square is connected to the pelvis plexus, or perineum center, and is associated to the sense of smell.
You can combine mantras and yantras by gazing on the sacred geometric patterns while chanting their corresponding mantras with heartfelt intention. Doing so, you will connect with the Divine Source from which all manifestation arises.
