Does anyone meditate on the avatars?
Do you use statues of Lord Krishna, the ubiquitous Lord Buddha, or Lord Jesus?
Do you close your eyes and visualise, or charge the image of the avatar with devotion, or do prostrations or sex magick or what???
How effective have others found this kind of visual meditation on gurus or spiritual teachers?

Greetings Paul!
The meditations which you describe would be called Diety Yoga and Guru Yoga. Of course, that is almost all I know about them! :) My evolving spiritual practice has very recently started to include just a little Diety Yoga.
One of the parts is to visualize the point of meditation (diety or guru) just above one's head, just above the Crown Chakra. Some schools describe further Charkas above the top of the head. Perhaps you would find it interesting to study the art and tradition of Tibetan Thangkas? (stylized images of dieties, etc. often designed for meditation)
I don't have much in the way of information, but I hope I've suggested useful avenues for further study!
Happy Adventures!
-Ben
